B.C.'s forest fire concerns hit home for several Metro Vancouver residents on Thursday when an urban wildfire broke out at the foot of Burnaby Mountain, prompting the evacuation of nearby homes.
The fire was discovered after residents reported seeing smoke near Production Way and Forest Grove Drive at around 5 p.m. Authorities say the blaze started in some dry brush, and quickly spread to one hectare in size.
Members of the Burnaby Fire Department and the B.C. Forest Service, aided by a dozen fire trucks and three helicopters, were quick to the scene and made short work of the fire. Residents returned to their homes by late Thursday night, and no injuries were reported.
Witnesses say young children may have started the fire while playing with matches. RCMP say that is one of the theories they are working on in their investigation.
