A man accused of opening fire on a crowd seemingly at random then turning the gun on himself has died in hospital, police say.
The 34-year-old Vancouver man reportedly got out of his car on Main Street near 26th Avenue just after 11 p.m. Thursday and fired two shots at people standing in the street – then shot himself, according to Const. Brian Montague.
Only one of the two people targeted was hit, Montague said, but escaped the incident with only minor injuries after being grazed by a bullet.
The shooter died in hospital Friday morning from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, he said.
Residents were stunned to hear the violent incident unfolded in what they say is a relatively quiet area.
“I started walking home and I hear ‘pop pop…pop,’ and I was like ‘No way,’” said Sasha Lakovic, who lives in Mount Pleasant. “I come outside and the cops are everywhere."
Montague said there is no apparent link between the shooter and his targets and investigators are trying to piece together why he opened fire on them.
