A woman is undergoing a psychological assessment after driving her Volkswagen Beetle head on into a car on Highway One in Abbotsford Sunday, seriously injuring the other driver, police say.

The crash occurred under the Mt. Lehman overpass in Abbotsford just after 9 a.m.

The woman’s car was travelling eastbound in the westbound lanes and RCMP say there was every indication that the 36-year-old Langley woman was aware of what she was doing.

Witnesses told police the Beetle did not swerve to avoid the collision. The woman sustained only minor injuries.

Emergency crew had to use the Jaws of Life to free both drivers, who were the only occupants of their vehicles.

The 29-year-old Abbotsford man driving the other vehicle sustained a broken femur and knee injuries. He was airlifted to hospital by BC Ambulance.

RCMP’s Fraser Valley Traffic Services and the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service unit are investigating.

Police say westbound traffic was affected during the investigation but reopened the highway by 1:30 p.m.
