Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for Metro Vancouver, with significant snow expected to start falling Tuesday night.
Authorities are warning of cold temperatures due to a vigorous frontal system and anticipate up to 15 centimetres of snow.
A blast of winter weather already caught drivers by surprise, causing dozens of crashes and slowing traffic to a crawl Monday morning.
Some TransLink services were delayed and bus service to the Simon Fraser University campus on Burnaby Mountain was halted due to dangerous road conditions.
As commuters plan for the latest dump of snow predicted for Tuesday night, drivers and pedestrians are urged to use extreme caution on slippery roads.
Worksafe BC is also urging drivers to avoid driving in treacherous winter conditions if possible.
If trips can’t be delayed, drivers should plan routes ahead, allow for plenty of time and try to travel in daylight.
Worksafe BC says drivers should keep at least four seconds' distance between cars, bring warm clothing in case cars get stuck and have an emergency plan in place.
Authorities also suggest letting someone know your route and planned arrival time, and to check the DriveBC website for current road conditions before leaving.
As well, with winter road crews salting and ploughing snowy streets, drivers are cautioned to be patient and not to pass maintenance vehicles.
