Update: The B.C. Coroners Service has identified the man killed in a landslide near wreck Beach in September as Michael Marceau, 23, of Riviere du Loup, Quebec.

His family has been notified, and coroners and the RCMP are continuing to investigate the tragedy.

Previous story: Investigators say a man whose body was found underneath a collapsed cliff face near Wreck Beach was likely buried alive in a tragic accident.

Hikers spotted two feet protruding from debris below a sandy cliff face at the point of Pacific Spirit Park at around 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Officers attending unearthed a man’s body. They believe the man was camping on the cliff face, known to be an active landslide, and say he was likely suffocated after the cliff collapsed.

The BC Coroners Service is expected to perform an autopsy Thursday. The man’s identity has not been released.

Police said the area he was found in is very remote and is only accessible by foot or by water.
