It was a special day for dozens of dogs rescued from “high-kill” California shelters as they were adopted into fur-ever homes in Metro Vancouver.
Sixty pooches rescued from euthanasia arrived at Landmark Aviation at Vancouver International Airport’s South Terminal on Saturday, an initiative led by the B.C. group Thank Dog I Am Out Rescue.
Jonny Staub from Virgin Radio was amongst the 100 volunteers eagerly awaiting their arrival.
“I’m a huge fan of rescue animals, and every dog, cat, bird, animal requires a home, and we’re glad to be here to help them find their forever home,” he said. “I’m so proud to be a part of this event.”
The dogs spent the night at the airport with volunteers who camped out, making sure the new arrivals were settling in.
On Sunday, 60 pre-approved families came to YVR to welcome a new pet into their home. Fifty-eight dogs were adopted, and three were put into foster homes until they find the perfect family.
The organization's work helps address the demand for small dogs in British Columbia -- most of the dogs adopted Saturday weigh 30 pounds or less.
“Up to 6,000 dogs can be euthanized a week in California because of overcrowded shelters,” said Susan Patterson, founder of Thank Dog I Am Out. “After this event we will have rescued over 650 dogs locally in B.C. and from abroad.”
Patterson said she always asks people to check with local shelters before adopting a dog through her rescue, but she says they aren’t always able to find a dog that suits their lifestyle in B.C. shelters.
Carl, Laura and Evie Bessai attended the event in search of a small dog, and were thrilled to welcome Benny into their home.
“We’ve been trying to adopt a dog for a while but small dogs are hard to find... so this seemed like a really good option for us because we knew there would be alot of little dogs here today,” said Laura, noting the family already has another dog named Rosie.
