The upper line of Whistler's Excalibur Gondola re-opened to skiers early Saturday.

The B.C. Safety Authority reinstated the operating permit for the upper line of the gondola on Blackcomb Mountain on Saturday, following inspections.

This comes after a tower on the lower line of the Excalibur sheared in half on Tuesday, Dec. 16, causing injuries to 12 skiers and trapping around 50 people for several hours.

Investigators found that the accident was caused by ice build-up inside the tower leading to ice-jacking or structural failure.

Whistler-Blackcomb, the resort's operators, said repair work to the lower line of the Excalibur had already been completed and they hoped that section would soon reopen. The Excalibur Gondola operates in two parts, making it easier to reopen the top half.

Skiers had been accessing the mountain through the recently opened Peak 2 Peak Gondola that connects Whistler and Blackcomb.
