The newest member of the Vancouver Aquarium's whale family needs a name - and you can help.

The facility is inviting Canadians to name the newest member of its new calf, born on June 10.

Starting Monday, Canadians are invited to submit a name suggestion on its website.

Submissions will be accepted until Friday, October 10. A panel of judges will select a shortlist of five finalist names, and Vancouver Aquarium members will vote on their favourite.

The winning name will be announced October 24.

The grand prize winner receives a "one of a kind" Beluga encounter with the baby and mom, Qila - which is short for qilalugag qualugtaq - beluga in Inuktitut.

The baby beluga has attracted tens of thousands of visitors since her birth three months ago. Two weeks after her birth, she was treated for an infected abscess just below her tail, but staff say she is fully recovered and very healthy.

The baby beluga, mom Qila and grandmother Aurora can be seen in the facility's Arctic Canada habitat or anytime on the live Beluga Cam.
