VPD issues scam warning after surge in calls 'spoofing' its number

Share

Vancouver police are reminding the public that they will never call and ask for money.

The Vancouver Police Department says it received several reports of scammers "spoofing" its non-emergency phone number on Friday.

The callers claimed to be calling from the VPD and asked for personal information and, in some cases, money.

In response, the department posted a reminder on social media, asking people to be aware of the scam.

"The police in Vancouver – or anywhere in the country, for that matter – will never call and ask for money," said VPD spokesperson Const. Tania Visintin.

People who are unsure if a call is legitimately from the VPD should hang up and call the department's non-emergency number – 604-717-3321 – to confirm.
