Vancouver Green party councillor Adrianne Carr makes a motion today asking council let city residents voice their opinion about captive whales.

Carr wants council to add a referendum question to the upcoming civic election ballot as the city and the Vancouver Park Board struggle with the issue of keeping whales and dolphins in captivity.

Last night, park board commissioners passed a motion calling for a closer look at the policy of captive cetaceans.

Carr wants the whales released, while Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson has also questioned the ethics of keeping whales and dolphins in captivity, but Park Board Commissioner Aaron Jasper says it's important to study the issue and contemplate all options before proceeding.
