The new born baby found dead in East Vancouver Thursday is a boy, CTV News has learned. The neighbourhood where he was found is still reeling and waiting for more questions about the case to be answered.
Flowers lie at the edge of a lawn, just a few steps away from where the body of a baby boy was found.
Derick Leung made the discovery inside a clear plastic bag next to his home.
"I opened up the bag I thought it was garbage. I wanted to throw it away because I don't want any garbage between my house and then I saw something red,'' he said.
Police descended on the street, searching for evidence, interviewing neighbors, and eventually carrying away the tiny body. We still don't know how the baby died.
"The autopsy will clarify the age of the child, and if there's any foul play,'' said Vancouver Police Const. Jana McGuiness. "So that's what we're looking for initially from the results of the autopsy,'' said. "And again, there's still a lot more work to be done."
Nives Venier lives a few doors away from where the baby was discovered. And like many people, she's wondering about the infant's mother.
"There are all kinds, a lot of kinds of people, so you never know, maybe she was desperate who knows,'' Venier said.
Police are calling this investigation very sensitive, and are keeping tight-lipped about all aspects of the case. But they hope the baby's mother won't be doing the same. They are still pleading for her to come forward.
"We also want to make sure she's getting the care she requires given that this is very much a newborn infant," said McGuinness.
