Thirteen years after truck driver Vic Fraser was stabbed to death during a robbery in Surrey, B.C., his accused killer is set to stand trial.
Gary Johnston has been charged with one count of second-degree murder in the 1998 slaying; his trial is scheduled to begin in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster on Monday.
Fraser was stabbed to death when he interrupted a thief in the process of robbing his sister's home in March 1998. The 43-year-old had been planning to meet his sister's boyfriend at the time.
Johnston wasn't arrested until more than 11 years after Fraser's death. He was living in Montreal at the time.
Surrey RCMP said Johnston's name surfaced early in the investigation, but there wasn't enough evidence to lay charges until an unsolved homicide unit was set up in the detachment in 2005, leading to new information in the case.
At the time of his arrest, Johnston was on parole for a manslaughter conviction.
