The provincial government is handing over responsibility to TransLink to collect fines from fare evaders, and violators could end up paying more.
TrankLink announced Friday the new legislation allows them to issue fare infraction tickets, collect fines and govern the dispute and appeal process.
Previously fare evasion was a provincial offence and fines were paid through ICBC with proceeds going to the B.C. government.
Starting Tuesday if you’re caught in a fare paid zone without proof of payment TransLink will fine you $173, the same amount as before, but that amount will increase if the fine goes unpaid.
After 180 days the fine will increase to $213 and after a year it goes up to $273. After that collection measures will be taken and ICBC could refuse to renew your drivers licence or insurance.
Unpaid fines issued before Sept. 4 must still be paid to the province or disputed through ICBC. Fines issued after that can be disputed through TransLink.
Have your say... Does the go far enough to curb fare evaders?
