Seconds before Robert Dziekanski was stunned with an RCMP Taser at Vancouver airport he shouted at the Mounties, asking if they were out of their minds.
Communication problems have emerged as a central issue that night, and for the first time the public is learning what the Polish immigrant was trying to say.
The Braidwood inquiry into his death in October of 2007 has heard a translator explain what Dziekanski was saying on a video shot of his last few minutes of life.
Kris Barski went through the witness video phrase by phrase.
Barski explained that Dziekanski was swearing, asking to be left alone, asking how long he would have to wait and threatening to trash the arrivals area.
"I will smash the glass and the glass here and you will see... So you will not let me go? You will not let me out of here?" said Barski, interpreting Dziekanski.
The translator says when the four Mounties arrive, Dziekanski shouts "Police! Police!" and asks the officers if they're crazy before they use the Taser on him.
"Obviously there's something wrong here. He's acting in an odd fashion," said Ravi Hira, the lawyer representing Kwesi Millington, the RCMP constable who fired the Taser at Dziekanski.
"That translation is juxtaposed with him throwing chairs; blocking off the IRL. Throwing computers. And as we heard from the last witness, this is behaviour that the witness has never seen before."
But when Helen Roberts, representing the Government of Canada, questioned Barski about his impression of Dziekanski's mental state, the interpreter disagreed that it meant anger.
"No. not in this case... confused and scared - fear," he said.
And Dziekanski's last words? He asked the police as they levelled the Taser at his - "why?"
