Suspect in fraudulent bank draft scheme that targeted luxury cars still at large, Richmond RCMP say
Mounties in Richmond are asking the public for help finding a man charged in a fraudulent bank draft scheme.
Shing Wai Wong was one of three people charged in October in connection to an alleged fraud ring that targeted individuals and businesses selling high-end vehicles in the Lower Mainland.
The three suspects allegedly used forged bank drafts to purchase the vehicles – including Porsches, BMWs and Audis – from sellers who listed them online. Combined losses in the case totalled more than $850,000, according to Richmond RCMP.
While the other two individuals involved in the scheme have been arrested, Wong remains wanted on an outstanding arrest warrant, the detachment said in a news release Wednesday.
Wong is charged with seven counts of fraud over $5,000 and one count of dealing with identity documents without a lawful excuse, according to online court records.
"Despite all efforts, Richmond RCMP have been unable to locate and arrest Wong," police said in their statement.
The detachment's economic crime unit launched its investigation in January of this year, searching two properties in April and arresting two individuals, including Wong, during their searches.
Wong was released after that arrest, and charges were not approved against him until six months later.
Now, police are asking anyone who has information on Wong's whereabouts to contact them at 604-278-1212 and quote file number 2024-5728.
Tips can also be provided anonymously via Crime Stoppers.
