Residents of the small B.C. community of Sparwood mark a grim anniversary Monday.

A year ago, eight men were killed when a series of avalanches pounded down on them as they were backcountry snowmobiling.

Jeff Adams was one of the men who survived.

A year later, what haunts him most is the questions he'll one day face from their kids.

Adams says he thinks about how the children will only know their dads from pictures and stories.

And he says he still doesn't know what he'll say when they come to him to find out more.

Adams says he doesn't know if he'll be able to speak at a candlelight vigil planned for the men.

He says what he remembers most about his friends is that they died trying to dig out the first man trapped beneath the snow when they were hit by more slides.

That makes them heroes, he says, and that's how he'll remember them at Monday's memorial.
