The evacuation order for the Smith Creek Fire was partially lifted Sunday morning according to officials.
The order had expanded three times and by Friday 2,500 people were out of their homes. Now about 2,400 have been allowed back.
Kelly Kay of the Central Okanagan Regional District Emergency Operations Centre said authorities will discuss the possibility of allowing the rest of the evacuees back home.
Cooler weather and higher humidity helped firefighters to contain 50 per cent of the blaze, up from about 30 per cent on Saturday according to the BC Wildfire Management Branch.
Residents returning to their homes in West Kelowna should be ready to leave their homes with little or no notice.
RCMP will be helping re-entry go smoothly and to enforce road blocks where evacuation orders are still in effect.
Fire crews are working to return the rest of the evacuees to their homes. If residents see fire activity they are asked not to call 911 as the contained fires will still be visible for several weeks. There are still 151 active fires and the evacuation order will be evaluated later Sunday.
The evacuation order is still in effect for properties in the Tallus Ridge Neighbourhood that are accessed via Mountains Hollow Lane and for properties accessed via Dixie Road in the Smith Creek Neighbourhood.
