Blind reliance on technology has the potential to cost a Canadian man his freedom.

Newfoundland resident Darrell Fudge is facing charges in Maine after accidentally driving through that state while returning home from a trip to B.C.

Fudge had no intention of entering the US but he programmed his GPS to select the shortest route to Newfoundland -- and it wasn't picky about international boundaries.

When he found himself on the wrong side of the border and tried to return to Canada, officials in Maine had no trouble sniffing out the half kilogram of B.C. bud stashed in a cooler in Fudge's car.

His lawyer says Fudge wants to settle the case but there's no word what he wants to do with the GPS.

Fudge is being held on $5,000 bail. He's expected to appear in court again on Wednesday.
