Police have released the names of a murdered woman in the B.C. Interior and her common-law husband who killed her.

Mounties say 48-year-old Gordon Wilson was shot and killed by an RCMP officer in 100 Mile House when he emerged from his home armed with a shotgun.

Police were called after 56-year-old Shelley Richards fled to a neighbour's home Tuesday morning after Wilson shot her in the torso.

She was able to call 911 on her own, but died en route to hospital. An autopsy is scheduled to be performed on Richards Thursday, with another scheduled for Wilson Friday.

Police say it's too early in the investigation to release details about whether the officer involved attempted to strike up a conversation with the man before he was killed.

A major crimes officers is conducting an investigation of the shooting and an observer for the RCMP Public Complaints Commission and the Delta Police Department will monitor.

The shooting has shaken up the small logging and farming community located 500 kilometres northeast of Vancouver.

"With all that's gone on in Vancouver, we certainly didn't want to bring it to our little town of 100 Mile," resident Debbie Dengel told CTV News.

"Yah, that's not very good for this town," resident Norm Mitchell said.
