Travel plans on the upcoming Labour Day long weekend could involve more delays than usual this year.

Hundreds of unionized Vancouver International Airport workers have voted strongly in favour of job action that could happen as soon as early September.

Three hundred YVR workers voted 83 per cent in favour of a strike. These employees provide crucial services at the airport, including emergency response, runway maintenance, airfield lighting and international arrival customer care.

The main tension points include the opportunity to work flexible hours as well as protection from contracting out jobs.

Dave Clark, regional vice-president of the Union of Transportation Employees, said YVR employers will not discuss the worker’s concerns regarding work-life balance and would like to implement a two-tier wage system by bringing in “seasonal” workers.

“We’re prepared to strike if our key issues aren't dealt with,’ Clark said. “The next move is up to the employer.”
