Up to 30 police investigators dug through trash at a Vancouver-area solid waste facility as part of a criminal investigation Friday afternoon.

The officials, all clad in biohazard suits, could be seen using rakes and shovels to prod through garbage at the Delta landfill, south of Vancouver. A small area has been cordoned off by red pylons.

RCMP officials confirm members are searching the area in relation to a criminal investigation in Richmond, and investigators are trying to remove evidence from the site.

No further information was expected to be released Friday.

Garbage from Metro Vancouver is taken to the Vancouver South Transfer Station (VSTS) before being trucked to the Delta Landfill, beside the Fraser River.

The site is also a dump for demolition materials like wood and asphalt.
