Surrey RCMP are investigating an allegation that an 88-year-old woman at Surrey Memorial Hospital was sexually assaulted in her hospital room by another patient.

A complaint was filed by the woman's daughter on Nov. 30, RCMP Staff-Sgt. Dave Brown told ctvbc.ca Wednesday night.

The complaint alleges that the woman was assaulted by a man who was a patient in the same room, Brown said.

The man is 78-years-old and may suffer from dementia, Brown said.

Brown said no arrest has been made but the detachment's major crimes unit is investigating.

He added that police are satisfied the hospital has taken appropriate safety measures and there is no risk to public safety.

Joan Marshall, a spokeswoman for Fraser Health, said Wednesday night via email that the hospital is conducting an internal review.

"As there is an active police investigation and an internal review at the hospital, it would be inappropriate to talk to any specifics," she wrote. "I can tell you that Fraser Health is completely cooperating with the RCMP investigation and is conducting a wide ranging internal review at the hospital."
