A scab-ridden, mange-covered puppy named Prudence is in much better shape nearly a month after she was anonymously dropped off at a Surrey veterinary clinic.
But no one has come forward with information on where the Doberman Pinscher came from or why she was abandoned, according to Kim Marosevich, Surrey’s animal control manager.
Prudence was about five months old when she was left at Allondale Animal Hospital, wrapped in an old jacket and barely moving.
Vets quickly discovered 90 per cent of Prudence’s body was infected with demodectic mange, a condition brought on by low immune system, in what appeared to be a severe case of animal neglect.
She was also severely underweight and emaciated. At 28 pounds, she weighed almost half of what a health puppy her age should.
But Prudence is on the rebound, Marosevich told CTV News in an email Wednesday. “Her foster mom had her at the vet yesterday for a check-up and she’s gaining weight, growing hair and starting to socialize with new dogs and people regularly,” she said.
The road to recovery will be a long one, but vets have faith Prudence will grow her coat back in the not-too-distant future.
