Mounties are investigating Wednesday after a body was found in a wooded area on southern Vancouver Island.

Cpl. Alex Bérubé of the Island District RCMP said the deceased person was found in a forested area near Shawnigan Lake, approximately 45 kilometres northwest of Victoria.

Investigators are still working to determine whether or not any criminality was involved in the death, Bérubé said in a statement.

The B.C. Coroners Service is conducting its own investigation into the discovery of the remains, police said.

The coroner's service did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the discovery.

The police statement did not provide any information about when and how the body was found, nor about the victim's approximate age, sex or other identifying details.

"To that effect, no further details will be shared at this time," the statement said.
