As the Vancouver Canucks and Boston Bruins prepare to face off in the Stanley Cup playoffs Wednesday night, so do the mayors of both hockey loving cities.

Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson is planning a playoff bet against Boston Mayor Tom Menino, honouring a longstanding tradition between the heads of rival cities who entertain a playful spirit, as well as a smidge of boastful arrogance.

No details have been finalized, but Robertson says he has a pretty good idea of what the West Coast city would send south of the border in the disastrous event that the Canucks fall to the Bruins.

"Salmon has certainly factored in there," a jersey-clad Robertson told reporters at a press conference Tuesday morning. "Sushi, we have some world-class sushi."

As for what he'd expect in return, Robertson says typical Boston cuisine is on the menu, including clam chowder, lobster and perennial favourite -- baked beans.

"I'm hoping we get some more exciting things like flying the Canucks flag at city hall in Boston after the Canucks win," he said.

For his part, Boston Mayor Tom Menino isn't shying away from a little hockey rivalry, saying he'll bet Robertson "whatever he wants."

"We've had bets with other mayors in other contests. The mayor of Tampa is wearing a Boston tie right now because he lost. Montreal -- he hasn't paid his yet," he said.

But even if he's excited to bet on his team, he might want to take a short geography lesson before the puck drops in Game 1 tomorrow night at Rogers Arena.

"I'm not gonna bet the city, but we have a much better city. I mean what do they have out there in Vancouver anyways? I dunno -- cold weather, snow, ice," Menino said.

Menino said that he's confident in his team's abilities to beat the Canucks.

"They're a lunch bucket kind of team. They're not superstars but they do their job everyday and that's what the Stanley Cup is all about," he said.

In 2009, the city of Vancouver sent a sampling of local fish, chocolate and beer to Chicago after losing to the Blackhawks during the playoffs.

While the mayors work out their wager, B.C. Premier Christy Clark is already jumping into the action.

She's agreed on a bet with her counterpart, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, to send Nanaimo bars and salmon in the unlikely event that Boston wins.

The Governor said he'll send Massachusetts chowder if the Canucks clinch the coveted cup.
