A 23-year-old Langley man was killed while driving in the 7000 block of Kingsway in Burnaby on Friday night in what was a targeted attack, police said on Saturday.
A 17-year-old Surrey woman was injured in the leg, and was taken to hospital.
Witnesses say two vehicles were driving alongside one another on Kingsway at East 14th Avenue at approximately 10 p.m., on the border between Burnaby and New Westminster, when there was gunfire.
The deceased victim's Porsche Cayenne crashed into a building after the driver was shot.
Police said the female victim was in an SUV, which was hit by gunfire.
"I heard a lot of successive popping noises," said Karen Gammon, a nearby resident. "And then I heard the sirens. It was about 15 to 20 shots. It sounded more like what a machine gun or automatic weapon would sound like, I guess."
Cpl. Dale Carr of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team told nearby residents not to worry.
"The community does not have to worry that there is somebody out there, just driving around shooting randomly," he said. "It does appear that it was a targeted attack."
Another nearby resident, Natalya Gantytska, said she is concerned about safety in the area.
"It's awful you know, we came to Canada six years ago, it was much better (then)," she said. "Now it's (becoming) worse and worse."
IHIT says it has not established any links to other homicides, drugs or organized crime, and the deceased victim is not known to them.
