Vancouver's The Cannery restaurant is closing its doors Saturday night after nearly 40 years of service.

The seafood restaurant's lease is up, and landlord Port Metro Vancouver says it won't be renewed due to security concerns stemming from The Cannery's waterfront location.

"It's kind of a hard pill to swallow," general manager Darren Barker said. "It's been a very busy, exciting weekend and we're going to miss all our staff, all our regulars who have been coming here for the past 39 years."

The restaurant has operated near the heart of the city, with a view of the North Shore Mountains, since 1971, amassing a many loyal customers.

But nostalgic patrons will have no luck popping in for a farewell bite on Saturday – every table available was booked by last October.

They will, however, get a chance to buy a piece of The Cannery at an auction next month at the restaurant.

Several old artifacts, including a whaling gun, a boat, a clock and furniture, will be up for grabs at noon on April 6 at 2205 Commissioner Street.
