A Vancouver Island park official says it's highly unlikely that a cougar shot this weekend is the same animal that attacked an 18-month old boy in August.

Dave McVetty of Pacific Rim National Park says park employees tracked down and shot the young cat on Saturday.

He says the animal had exhibited stalking behaviour against a group of men earlier in the day and showed unusually bold behaviour in the area in previous days.

McVetty says the cougar was young and small, about the size of a German shepherd dog.

He says its paws were smaller than the animal that attacked 18-month-old Julien Sylvester.

During that attack at a national park lake, Sylvester suffered puncture wounds at the back of his skull and was then treated at BC Children's Hospital.
