Homicide investigators take over Port Moody marina case after body found
Homicide investigators have taken over the case of a body found in the water at a marina in Port Moody on New Year's Day.
In a statement Saturday, the Lower Mainland's Integrated Homicide Investigation team said it has assumed conduct of the investigation into the discovery, which occurred around 9:20 a.m. Wednesday at the Reed Point Marina on Barnet Highway.
On Thursday, the Port Moody Police Department said its major crime unit was investigating after the body of a woman in her 60s was retrieved from the water.
The PMPD said criminality had not been ruled out in the case, a point IHIT reiterated in its statement Saturday morning.
"The circumstances surrounding the death have been deemed suspicious and criminality cannot be ruled out at this time," the statement reads.
IHIT said it is working with the PMPD, RCMP Integrated Forensic Identification Services and the BC Coroners Service to advance the investigation. It asked witnesses and those with surveillance or dash cam video to come forward and share what they know.
"We are interested in speaking with anyone who was in the area of Reed Point Marina between 3 p.m. on Dec. 31, 2024, and 9:30 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2025," said Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT, in the statement.
Investigators said they believe the woman's death is "an isolated incident" with no further risk to the public. They added that they're not identifying the victim "out of respect for her family's privacy during this very difficult time."
Anyone who has information or video related to the case should call IHIT "as soon as possible," Fong said.
The IHIT information line can be reached at 877-551-4448. Information is also accepted via email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
