If you think it costs a lot to fill your gas tank, take a moment and pity drivers on Salt Spring Island.

Gas prices there are a whopping $1.43 per litre -- much higher than gas prices in the rest of B.C., which right now are hovering around $1.20 per litre.

"It's outrageous," said Salt Spring resident John Healey. "I'm not sure, I might have to take a mortgage out... but that's the price of living on the Island."

Oil prices are at record highs, and come July, B.C.'s new carbon tax will kick in, making prices that much higher.

It's like pumping liquid gold into your tank. Residents aren't sure why prices are so much higher, because it has to be shipped over ferries to other islands as well.

And it's a lot cheaper on Vancouver Island, where the town of Campbell River has the cheapest gas on the islands by 25 cents per litre.

The rising price of fuel has affected the cost of many commodities, as nearly everything has to use fuel to get to market.

At Reid Organic Farms, costs for both the chicken and the egg are taking flight.

"Our costs just keep rising out of this world," said farmer Brad Reid.

That means consumers will have to kick in more change to buy everything from bananas to bagels.

Gary King of Hazelmere Organic Farm says the best way to avoid the high prices is to buy local.

By doing that, you can eliminate the costs of shipping food from California, Brazil, and China, he said.
