A seven-year-old girl from Langley is expected to make a full recovery after ingesting what police believe was the date-rape drug.

On Saturday night, the child was found unconscious, possibly from a drug overdose, at her home in Langley and was rushed to Surrey Memorial Hospital. She was later transferred to BC Children's Hospital.

"She went in her room…and laid down," said a neighbour, who identified herself as Doreen. "And her dad—or who we assume to be her daddy—couldn't wake her up when it was supper time."

RCMP Cpl. Holly Marks said police believe the girl may have ingested GHB by accident.

GHB is an illegal drug, produced in liquid form that is tasteless and odourless. It is known as the date-rape drug because it makes a person severely impaired and often unconscious. Many women have been sexually assaulted after unknowingly ingesting drinks laced with the drug.

Police are still trying to find out how the little girl came into contact with GHB.

"It is possible that it was contained in a water bottle, that she would have drank it innocently," said Marks. "I don't know why or what purpose it served in the residence."

Police have interviewed the girl's mother and a man who is currently staying at their home. The Serious Crime Unit will continue the investigation to determine whether criminal charges will be recommended.

The Ministry of Children and Families will also look into this matter, said Marks.
