Householders in Vancouver will soon be able to put out food scraps with their yard trimmings to be collected and composted by the city.

Beginning Thursday, scraps including coffee grounds, eggshells, teabags, and uncooked fruits and vegetables will be collected every other week on scheduled days for yard-trimming pick-up.

For now, meat, dairy products, animal droppings, bread and cooked food are not eligible for collection.

Beginning in 2011, all food scraps will be allowed, and collection will ramp up to once a week.

Apartment buildings, condominiums and businesses are not included in the new composting program.

The city estimates that as much as 35 per cent of a typical home's garbage can be composted.
