Eyewitnesses of a two-hectare fire in West Kelowna Saturday night say fireworks were being used near the park.

The fire sparked around 7 p.m. in a difficult area in Kalamoir Regional Park, according to fire rescue crews.

Investigators have determined the fire was human caused, but can’t yet confirm that fireworks sparked the flames

Five homes were evacuated for two hours while crews worked to get the fire under control. A helicopter and ground crews were used to knock down hot spots in the steep, rugged terrain.

Crews returned to the park Sunday morning to continue to douse hot spots and construct a guard around the perimeter of the fire, which was 50 per cent contained.

Anyone with information is asked to call West Kelowna RCMP at 1-250-768-2880.
