The mayor of Port Coquitlam, B.C, is hoping voters will look past his legal troubles in the November municipal elections.
Scott Young isn't hoping to be re-elected as mayor, but he's hopeful he can get a seat on city council when his term runs out next month.
Young submitted his papers for a council seat late Friday afternoon, just before the nomination deadline of 4 p.m.
Two councillors have decided to seek the mayoralty, while a third is retiring.
Young received a 12 month conditional sentence earlier this year after pleading guilty to assaulting his former girlfriend and her new partner in April 2007.
His conditional sentence will be followed by another 18 months of probation. Young will also serve 60 hours of community service.
The existing council has called for they mayor's resignation three times since his 2007 arrest but under provincial rules, councillors can't remove someone unless they miss four consecutive meetings or are absent from their post for 60 days.
At his sentencing, Young's lawyer said Young likely won't run in the election.
