Port Coquitlam Mayor Scott Young has been given a one-year conditional sentence for assaulting his former girlfriend after she broke up with him last year.

Young pleaded guilty to the attack on Colleen Preston and her new boyfriend in Preston's home.

A provincial court judge says Young must obey an 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew, except for nights he needs to attend council meetings.

He's also been placed on 18 months of probation and must stay away from alcohol, drugs and his victims.

Young, who blamed alcoholism for his troubles, has remained on as mayor despite a 1,200-strong petition by local residents calling for his resignation.

His lawyer has said Young likely won't run in this fall's municipal election.
