An elderly man appears to have slipped and fallen to his death while hiking alone on a steep trail near the popular Grouse Grind route in North Vancouver.
The RCMP has confirmed that North Shore Search and Rescue recovered the body at the BCMC trail, which was closed for the winter. The trail ends at the top of Grouse Mountain.
His body was found by a couple who were also in the area, and it is believed he had only been there a few hours when it was spotted.
The RCMP say this serves as a harsh reminder to anyone planning to venture out on the trails this time of year.
Const. Marlene Morton described it as "a sudden death", but could not confirm whether the man had suffered a sudden illness or had been killed by the fall.
"The trail is closed -- conditions are poor -- and hiking alone is never a good idea," she said.
She said the death was not suspicious.
The man is thought to have hiked in the area regularly. His name won't be released until next of kin are notified.
The Grouse Grind, which takes 100,000 hikers to the top of Grouse Mountain each year, is also currently closed.
