Adrian Dix remains ahead after two rounds of vote counting in the race for the next leader of the B.C. New Democrats.

Party secretary Jan O'Brien announced that third preferences will need to be counted to determine the next party leader.

Dix, the MLA for Vancouver-Kingsway, has secured 7,748 votes, trailed by Mike Farworth with 6951 and John Horgan with 5,038.

Horgan joins marijuana activist Dana Larsen, who was eliminated in the first round with 531 votes.

A total of 19,756 votes were cast, including a number of spoiled ballots. The winning candidate requires 9,867 to become the new BC NDP leader and, the party faithful hope, a potential premier-in-waiting.

The bulk of the votes, roughly 18,100, were cast in advance polling online and over the phone during the past week.

Another roughly 10,000 party members were eligible to vote Sunday.

The remaining votes are being cast on the floor of the Vancouver Convention Centre using either cell phones or computers.

A final winner is expected shortly after 6 p.m.
