There were some scary moments for a group of people in White Rock last night after a deck collapsed, causing 11 people – including a four-year-old boy – to fall six feet to the ground.

It happened on Marine Drive around 10 p.m. Friday night. The group had gathered to watch the Canada Day fireworks when the front end of the patio gave way.

Images from the scene showed patio furniture, plants, and wooden posts strewn around the front of the home.

“We were about to watch the fireworks with all of us on the deck when the… deck exploded,” said Matt, who co-rents the 99-year-old home. “But we all came out fine.”

Retired Fire Chief Dave Rivett lives next door to the home. He says he heard a loud noise and a bunch of glass breaking, and when he looked over his neighbours’ deck had collapsed.

“I immediately went over and was concerned that someone was under the deck,” he said. “Fortunately everyone was okay, and nobody was under the debris.”

Emergency crews assessed patients at the scene, and took one woman to the hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

No one was seriously injured in the collapse.
