A young woman was left shaken but remarkably uninjured after a car slammed through the wall of her bedroom after a Burnaby shooting.
Ed Ko told CTV News his 21-year-old daughter Rachel had just fallen asleep in her room on the lower level of their family home when the vehicle came barreling through the wall.
The impact of the crash, which lodged the back end of the sedan into the room, knocked out a large portion of wall, beams and a window frame.
Flying debris blocked the door, trapping Rachel in her room – and the car landed just a few feet away from her bed.
After running downstairs to help her, Ko said he could feel the heat of the car because the engine was still on and the wheels were turning.
Unable to get into his daughter’s room, he ran outside with a sledgehammer in an effort to break away a portion of wall to get his daughter out of the smoke-filled room.
"It was so much smoke," he said. "[I] broke windows on the side to clear out some air. I was worried she was going to be choking."
Ko says his daughter was "very distraught" but physically unharmed. She has spoken to victim services.
RCMP believe the shooting victim was driving or parked on East Broadway when someone opened fire on the vehicle – sending the injured man and the car out of control and into the basement of the residence.
After receiving a flood of calls around 1 a.m., officers arrived to the car in the home and the injured man still inside the vehicle.
He was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to survive.
Sgt. Annie Linteau said the 44-year-old victim is well known to police and is affiliated with an organized crime group.
Police believe the shooting is targeted and say there is no danger to the public. It does not appear any arrests have been made and a large gun was recovered at the scene.
The shooting has left the otherwise quiet neighbourhood on edge.
"We knew there was something wrong. It sounded like gunshots so we actually took cover – and then we heard a crash," a neighbour who identified himself as Chris said.
Chris said police told him the violent incident is linked to a "string of gang wars."
Ally James called the shooting in the neighbourhood "scary."
"It just makes you a little more cautious and just sort of thinking that it's not always as safe as you want it to be," she said.
An officer responding to the shooting was also injured when his cruiser hit a fence near Canada Way.
Police are now canvassing the area for evidence.
