Abbotsford police have recommended a charge against an RCMP officer involved in a fatal head-on collision in Agassiz last summer.

Investigators say the junior Chilliwack Mountie was responding to a domestic dispute on July 12 when his cruiser crossed the centre line and crashed into an oncoming Ford Mustang.

The Mustang driver, 20-year-old Steven Genberg, was airlifted to hospital in critical condition. He died six days later. A 19-year-old passenger in the car was also seriously wounded.

The officer, whose name has not been released, broke his arm. He faces a single count of driving without due care and attention.

Abbotsford police say the Mountie was driving 99 kilometres per hour in an 80 zone, and did not have his emergency equipment activated at the time of impact. Genberg was driving roughly 60-74 kilometres per hour.

Genberg, who worked as a truck driver for Mission Auto Body, had recently learned he was going to be a first-time father.

Crown counsel will determine whether to approve the recommended charge or any others.
