Vancouver police have laid changes against a 32-year-old Calgary man in connection to a brazen shooting outside a downtown nightclub early Sunday morning.

Investigators say a man opened fire outside the Barcelona Lounge nightclub on Granville Street after getting into a heated verbal argument with one of the bouncers. The 39-year-old doorman was struck twice in the leg while hundreds of revellers looked on.

A bouncer from another nightclub and several Good Samaritans gave chase and apprehended the suspect on Davie Street, but not before police say he turned and tried to shoot his pursuers.

"During the chase, the accused allegedly turned and tried to fire the gun at his pursuers but for some reason the gun didn't fire," Const. Lindsey Houghton said in a release.

The wounded doorman was rushed to hospital, where he remains in treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

A handgun was found near where the suspect was arrested, police say.

Hassan Omar Hassan of Calgary, Alberta, has been charged with attempted murder, use of a firearm during a fight, carrying a concealed weapon and the possession of a prohibited weapon without a licence.

Police say Hassan is well-known to police in Calgary, where he is currently accused of firearm, property and drug-related offences.
