Slumdog Millionaire, a story about a boy from the slums of Mumbai, is the favourite to win best picture at the Oscar's on Sunday night.

It's a proud moment for the stars of the movie, and some of their supporters, one of whom was right here in B.C. on Saturday.

Sridevi is one of Bollywood's biggest stars. On Saturday she was in Surrey, B.C., for the East West Asian lifestyle show.

Sridevi is the sister-in-law of Anil Kapoor, the Regis Philbin of Slumdog Millionaire, the story of an uneducated slum kid who wins a television quiz show.

It's been nominated for 10 Oscars, much to Sridevi's delight.

"We are all very proud of the film,'' she said. "An Indian film deserves something like this."

Although there was criticism of the film for its depiction of Mumbai's slums, it has captured the hearts of millions of fans. The film's success has even surprised Kapoor, who's starred in dozens of blockbusters in his native India.

"I never expected the film to have this kind of response. This appreciation. We are honoured. We are so happy. So excited,'' he said.

"Two of the film's youngest actors are from the Mumbai slums, chosen by the British producers to depict orphans.

Although they weren't supposed to make the trip to Los Angeles, their parents decided to let them attend the Oscar ceremony at the last minute.

"Even in my wildest dreams, I didn't believe I'd go to America,'' said Indian child star Rubina Ali,

"I haven't thought about it much, but deep inside my heart, I am very happy,'' added Azharuddin Ismail, who plays an orphan in the movie.

If the pundits are right, Slumdog Millionaire will take the Oscar's by storm, giving the night some Bollywood flair.
