BC Ferries is bringing back fuel surcharges on June 1 because of rising oil prices.

The extra fee will amount to 2.5 per cent on the major routes between the mainland and Vancouver Island and five per cent on the minor routes.

There will be no surcharge added on the routes connecting Horseshoe Bay and Langdale, Port Hardy and Prince Rupert and Prince Rupert and Haida Gwaii.

The last time BC Ferries imposed a fuel surcharge was in 2008 and the company had since rolled back those increases and offered travellers rebates in some cases.

BC Ferries says while it's cut fuel consumption by four per cent since 2003, it will likely spend more than $120 million on fuel this fiscal year.
