The BC Conservatives have fired a high-profile election candidate over controversial comments he made online.

Vancouver-False Creek candidate Ian Tootill was fired Wednesday over “unacceptable” and “downright shameful” statements, said BC Conservative Leader John Cummins.

In October 2012 Tootill posted on Twitter "Who's really to blame? Hitler or the people who acted on his words?” and in May 2011 he posted a derogatory comment about women.

Cummins said disrespectful comments will not be tolerated by the party. “We are a party that believes in a respectful airing of views,” he said.

Tootill responded to the party’s decision in a tweet Wednesday saying he does not agree with the decision but accepts it.

“In heat of an election campaign it's difficult 4(sic) subtleties 2(sic) be discussed,” he said on Twitter.
