A Vancouver Island man who went missing after the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan has been found safe.

Jonathon Jones, a 32-year-old English teacher from Nanaimo, has been living near the epicentre of the quake in Sendai for four years.

His father Trevor Jones was unable to reach him all day Friday after the earthquake and ensuing tsunami destroyed much of the city.

Trevor Jones emailed CTV News on Sunday to say that his son and his Japanese girlfriend have been located and they are both fine.
