A man in his 20s has been seriously burned in an explosion in an Abbotsford, B.C., apartment suite.

Police in that Fraser Valley city, east of Vancouver, say the explosion occurred just before 1 a.m. Monday morning.

They say it appears the victim was using butane gas in a bathroom of the suite and suffered burns to his upper body in the blast that also blew out the apartment windows.

Several other people were in the apartment at the time but were not hurt.

No other suites were damaged.

Investigators believe the man was using the butane for suspected illegal activity but haven't said if charges are being considered.
