People who ride buses and SkyTrain could see fares go up as early as next year.
Regional transportation commissioner Martin Crilly is approving a three percent fare increase next year but rejected any more increases after that.
The fare increase request was included in TransLink's 2010 ten-year plan which Crilly responded to on August 31st.
In the response Crilly said he was "reluctant to allow short-term fares to rise so quickly."
The commissioner also noted that TransLink's average cost per vehicle-kilometre has increased 15 percent over and above the general rate of inflation and that couldn't fully be explained by increases in TransLink's fuel, security and maintenance costs.
Crilly suggested TransLink should get money from the government to expand its services and avoid cuts to its operations.
The mayor's council will vote on the funding increases for TransLink in October.
