A 27-year-old man has been charged in connection with a deadly hit and run in Abbotsford Thursday night.
Kenneth Howarth turned himself into Abbotsford police on Friday night accompanied by his lawyer. Police say he has been charged with one count of failure to stop at the scene of an accident.
He is due to appear in court on Nov. 25.
The victim, 80-year-old Bachan Gill, was struck on Sept. 30 while crossing Clearkbrook Road near Newcastle Drive.
Before the crash, Gill had been playing cards with friends at a nearby park. His friends say they witnessed the accident from across the street.
Two days after the crash, Gill's grieving family is struggling to cope with the loss of a beloved patriarch.
Balbir Gill, the victim's son, was in tears imagining his father's final moments. "Did my dad say anything?" he said. "Did he cry?"
They were also eager to learn whether police would file more charges against Howarth.
Sgt. Casey Vinet said it's still early in the investigation, and there are several questions to answer about the accident.
"Was he driving erratically? Was he drinking? Was he speeding? These are things we just don't know," Vinet said.
Investigators are still looking for a possible witness, a woman believed to be from Edmonton who called police to report an erratic driver in the are of Old Yale Road and Townline Road around the time of the crash.
Anyone with information is asked to call police at 604-859-5225.
