A 20-year-old pedestrian is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after being struck by a vehicle in Abbotsford Friday morning.

Police were called to the intersection of Townline and Upper Maclure roads around 11:10 a.m. for a report of a collision involving a pedestrian, the Abbotsford Police Department said in a news release.

When they arrived, first responders found that a single vehicle had struck the pedestrian, who was crossing at the intersection.

The victim was airlifted to hospital in critical condition, according to BC Emergency Health Services, which said it dispatched four ambulances and a helicopter to the scene.

Images from the scene show a tan Dodge Caravan with a missing passenger's side mirror parked on the side of the road.

Abbotsford police spokesperson Sgt. Paul Walker told reporters at the scene that the van struck the pedestrian, and that the driver had remained at the scene and is co-operating with the investigation.

"Early indications suggest that the pedestrian was, in fact, in the crosswalk and did have the right of way," Walker said. "We're currently undergoing extensive area canvassing for CCTV, witnesses and things like that that are forming part of this investigation.

Walker added that police will be looking at factors including weather and road conditions, as well as speed, as they investigate the crash. Driver impairment has been ruled out as a possible cause of the collision, he said.

Police are asking anyone with information to call 604-859-5225.

The intersection will be closed for "most of the afternoon" as collision reconstructionists work with investigators at the scene, police said.
