Get ready to slather on the sunscreen and soak in some sunshine this weekend.

After a few days of overcast and rainy weather in Vancouver, the forecast is looking up just in time for the weekend. Temperatures are expected to reach the mid-20s in Vancouver and soar to highs of 30 C inland on Saturday and 31 C inland on Sunday, according to Environment Canada, who has issued a warning about the high temperatures.

Though water restrictions started earlier this year, both Seymour and Capilano reservoirs are currently full and at higher than normal levels.

Spokes Bike Rental manager Anna Ryden said the shop is adding extra staff to accommodate the anticipated crowds this weekend.

As you plan your weekend activities, Dr. Jason Rivers of Pacific Dermaesthetics warns that ultraviolet (UV) rays are most intense between the hours of 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

“People are going to be jumping up and down because they can now go outside and enjoy the beautiful summer weather, but the key thing to remember is the sun, although it warms our skin, it also can damage our skin,” he told CTV News.

Rivers said that when the UV index is high, people with very fair skin can burn within only 15 to 20 minutes of sun exposure.

Here are some tips from Rivers to ensure maximum protection from the sun’s rays.

1. Apply sunscreen about 15 minutes before going outside so it can work effectively.

2. Do activities in the sun before 11 a.m. or after 3 p.m. to avoid the most damaging UV rays.

3. Wear a long-sleeve shirt or clothing made from breathable material, along with a hat and sunglasses.

4. No sunscreen is truly waterproof, so remember to re-apply sunscreen after sweating or spending time in the water.
